Quartz (English: quartz ) is the second most abundant mineral in the continental crust , after feldspar [2] . Its crystal structure is a continuous framework of SiO 4 ( silicon - oxygen tetrahedron ), in which each oxygen is present on two tetrahedrons. Shared between bodies, the total chemical formula of SiO 2 is obtained . There are many types of quartz. Colorless and fully transparent quartz is called rock crystal . Some are used as semi- precious stones . Since ancient times, quartz has been widely used to make jewelry and hard stone carvings, especially in Europe and the Middle East. Pure quartz can pass ultraviolet , visible light and infrared rays in a certain wavelength range , and has properties such as optical rotation , piezoelectric effect and electrostriction .
